So how is this different than the experiences of GearPage forum members? The stories usually go like this: the members either rave about how perfect their new guitar is- and eventually sell it- or, they are an excited new member who orders a guitar, they receive it with a bad looking top or an unsatisfactory tone (because itвЂ™s made of weird combos of wood/options,) then they return/sell the guitar and disappear from the forums forever. IвЂ™ve been a forum member of Kiesel/Carvin since about 2004. I donвЂ™t know if that does affect the tone. Some have attributed this to their construction methods and the graphite rods in the neck. Many of their models look and play WAY better than they sound. They play as well as any custom built instrument costing 3x as much. Generally, the following is true of Kiesel/Carvin: Ive been a member here since 2008, and IвЂ™ve had numerous crappy Carvin/Kiesel experiences. I am not the only one to have this experience. My experience made me to decide to not ever buy another Kiesel again, because they canвЂ™t deliver what they promised and then make up excuses why a guitar canвЂ™t be returned for mistakes. And my conclusion, as it has been for many others, is that JK is a real a$$hat to deal with. However, I would not order a higher end top because you just donвЂ™t know what you are going to get. So if you want a high quality good playing instrument, go ahead and try them out. Otherwise the guitar was of very high quality and played like a dream, the best playing guitar I have.

I accepted the guitar back, and interestingly didnвЂ™t have to pay shipping, which tells me that they pretty much admitted they screwed up, because if I had made the error the shipping costs surely wouldnвЂ™t have been free (about $100 each way with insurance). Alternatively I could have a more expensive model of a body type different than mine having to pay the difference of the extra build cost.

I was given 24 hours to accept the guitar as is, or it would be sold off their site. I have the receipt showing my neck was a standard option, not custom, and therefore returnable. Instead, I was informed that they were no longer honoring my request as Jeff Kiesel said that me not liking the top was not a reason for having the guitar remade and that my guitar was not returnable because it had a custom neck.

A month and a half later, I received another email thinking it was about the progress on my guitar. The rep emailed me back and stated that I was absolutely correct and he didnвЂ™t know how the guitar got by QC, so I traveled 20 miles to the next town to ship it back from a special FedEx facility. I called and spoke with a representative who asked for me to email them pictures of what the problem was, and I included examples of what they were advertising as burl maple tops on their website and Instagram page. The absolute worst top I have on any of my >25 guitars including cheap foreign made models.

When the guitar arrived nearly 5 months later, not the 10 weeks I had been told, the top was not like a burl pattern, but instead a non-bookmatched tiger stripe with a couple of tiny burl areas on one side of the top. I ordered a highly customized Kiesel a couple of years ago for about a $1000 less than a higher end (non-custom shop) Gibson model that is somewhat similar.
